With a heavy heart, Avery Biomedical announces the passing of Dr. Roy Edward Carter Jr. He passed away on January 28, 2021 peacefully at his home.
Dr. Carter was among the first doctors to implant the Avery Diaphragm Pacemaker, and implanted our first spinal cord injury patient, Kathleen DeSilva. Dr. Carter’s success can be attributed to 39 years of hard work and research with the Texas Institute of Rehabilitation Research (TIRR). Dr. Carter was recognized around the world for his work with ventilator-dependent patients. He was a founding member and president of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) and received the ASIA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He will be missed.
